4 Qualities and Traits of a Good School Captain

What are the qualities of a good school captain? This should be the first question of anyone aspiring to become one — and it's also the question schools should ask before appointing a pupil leader. After all, a school captain will have a tough role to fulfil as the student body leader and as a bridge between the students and the school administration. Here are the four qualities he or she must possess: 

Good communication skills

As a student representative and an intermediary between the school admin and the students, the school captain should be an excellent communicator. It's more than just about being able to speak confidently in front of the school community—it's also about having the capacity to listen to the concerns and desires and speak up for others in an effective manner. The pupil leader should also be able to pass on information from the administration to the students with clarity. 

Grit  

One of the essential 21st-century qualities of a good school captain is grit. In ever-demanding school life, captains need to have the emotional and mental strength to endure and succeed as a student and as a leader. Grit is a personality trait defined by Angela Duckworth as perseverance and passion for long-term goals. 

Organisation

With so many things that school captains must do and meetings to attend to, they surely have to be organised. School captains must always be on top of school events, fundraising, as well as their school work. They need to know how to take note of all the important tasks and delegate them to the right members of the team. 

People skills 

This is one of the essential qualities of a good school captain. Being a people-person means having the capacity to bring different individuals together. This is important, especially when promoting a cause and driving members of the school community towards a common goal.
