The Effectiveness of the 4 Cs Education Framework

Students 16 to 18 years old have a lot of opportunities for growth when they leave school, pursue higher education, and join the workforce later on. However, not all of them will be ready due to the lack or absence of crucial skills and other factors that could push them to become more successful and achieve the things they want. Schools also have the responsibility to empower students and make them career-ready with effectively leadership skills. They are more likely to succeed by adopting the 4 C’s education framework.

The Four Cs stand for competence, confidence, character, and connection. These are inspired by the research of Jean Cote and Wade Gilbert on effective sports coaching. By adopting the same principles and applying them to learning experiences, students can be effectively empowered to become more competent, confident, and connected leaders who are self-aware, empathetic, and responsible.

The 4 C’s defined

  • Competence – These refer to skills learners are developing, whether they are tactical (how) or technical (what), and linked intrinsically to performance outcomes.
  • Confidence – The development of positive self-worth and recognizing that learners can use the knowledge they gain to influence others and themselves.
  • Character – How learners develop their sense of self-awareness and behaviours, like integrity, responsibility, and empathy in communities where they apply their learnings.
  • Connectedness – How learners are able to establish and foster good working relationships where they must apply their learning.

Ultimately, the 4 C’s framework should enable young learners to leave school and face the world with enhanced competence, confidence, character, and connection regardless of their course. It takes a fun and purposeful learning environment to effectively teach students to learn and embrace the 4 Cs—an environment where they are supported and reviewed by teachers, mentors, and coaches that fully understand the framework and how to teach it.
